Neuman Drakensbergers History

It all started in the early 1920’s...

The Neuman farming enterprise started with my grandfather, Abraham Neuman, who was a speculator.

The breeding of Drakensbergers began in the 50’s when my late father, Hymie Neuman, and his brother and partner Sam saw potential in this breed.

In 1981 I started a supreme Drakensberger stud and named it HYMGERT after my parents, Hymie and Gertie. I selected the finest 42 cows out of our commercial herd of almost 2000. For years, the stud animals received the same treatment as the commercial herd.

In 1983 I bought 11 Merelsvlei cows from Mr. Chris Vickery’s dispersal sale, which played a huge role in the success of the stud.

In the past 10 years the Hymgert stud has, amongst other awards, won more than 8 times the ‘Best Bred Bull’ on the annual Drakensberger bull sale, as well as achieved the highest prices.

Then 6 years ago we bought the entire Frelon Drakensberger stud, which belonged to late and well-known breeder Mr. Pieter Botha.

The Frelon stud achieved numerous awards but one of the best testimonials came from Mr. Klein Muller where he wrote: “I bought a stud bull from Frelon on a bull sale from Mr Pieter Botha. It was the last stud bull I had bought and since then no bull could ever match its performance”.

Today we own the biggest Drakensberger stud in the country consisting of 1021 animals where Hymgert and Frelon bloodlines are kept separately; and if needed, interbreeding the 2 bloodlines is done to improve some characteristics.
